Neville distinguished the little “I” — the everyday personality, reacting to circumstance — from the deeper “I AM”, awareness itself, in which all imagining takes place. The first seems pushed around by the world; the second is the ground from which worlds are imagined.
Practice, in his telling, is a shift of identity: from being the character on the screen to knowing yourself as the light projecting it. “I AM” is not arrogance — it is the simple recognition that awareness comes before every state you attach to it.
When you say “I am unwell, I am stuck, I am behind,” notice that you are conferring being on a passing state. The same “I AM” can just as truly be joined to wholeness. Choosing what follows it is the whole art.
For a minute, rest as the awareness behind your thoughts — the “I AM” that simply notices them.
What states have you been giving your “I AM” to lately?
